A Clinical Case Study: A 57 year old male with sudden onset unexplained bilateral upper and lower limb weakness

02 November 18

Mr B, a 57 year old male, non smoker for 11 years, with no health issues apart from high blood pressure presented with a 7 week history of sudden onset bilateral weakness of the arms and shoulders. Mode of onset was attributed to lifting a heavy box at work: the next day he was unable to lift his arms and for the following 6 days he was unable to lift a fork to his mouth. He denied cervical, shoulder, arm or thoracic pain. Gradually he regained some strength but was unable to abduct his arms above 45°. A week or so later he felt severe tightening of the calf muscles bilaterally, followed by bilateral thigh weakness when walking, especially when walking up stairs. When he presented to me, he claimed that walking 100 meters was difficult and that he needed to rest his legs. He denied any sensory changes.

Chronic Inflammatory Diseases: Suppress or Boost?

24 Hour Fasting Boosts Stem Cell Regeneration

04 June 18

New research suggests that 24 hour fasting has significant benefits beyond weight loss. The research that was conducted on mice showed that restricting calorific intake for just 24 hours activates metabolic changes in gut stem cells causing them to enter into a regenerative stage and thereby heal the gut lining. This is exciting because rejuvenation slows with age, however, the change in stem cells was activated in both young and old mice. Research at MIT have discovered, albeit in mice, that fasting for just 24 hours greatly improved gut stem cells' ability to regenerate, in both young and old mice. It appears that fasting activates a metabolic change in the gut causing it to switch from burning carbohydrates to burning fatty acids and stimulating stem cells to become more regenerative. Fasting has long been associated with longevity and now, it would seem that science is catching up and explaining why it should be so. As we age, the regenerative capacity of our stem cells slows, which is why older people heal more slowly. This also holds true for the gut lining which affects metabolism and absorption. If fasting causes the same change in the human gut, 24 hour fasting could prove beneficial to older people, those with damaged intestinal lining through medication, infection or lifestyle. A word of caution - consult your doctor if you are diabetic and considering fasting.
